Effective Forklift Safety Training Tips
OSHA regulations stipulate important aspects of forklift safety training:
- Topics to be covered
- How instruction should be provided
- When refresher training should be done
- That instruction must be site and equipment specific
- That the employer is responsible for ensuring all drivers have proper training
Important considerations:
- Training should provide site and application specific training
- Training should be equipment specific
- Effective training should include "off-the-truck" activities and procedures such as pre-shift inspections and safe battery handling
- Classroom instruction should include multi-media materials and instruction on OSHA regulations, accident prevention, driving skills, fueling and charging, inspections, materials handling, and hazards
- Hands-on training is important so that students can apply classroom information
- Hands-on training should be specific to actual working conditions and applications
- Hands-on training should be done on vehicles they will be using day-to-day
- Test and evaluate competencies before awarding certificates of completion
- Don't be afraid to honestly assess driver competencies - it's your company that's on the line when it comes to an OSHA inspection
- Pedestrian safety training and forklift hazard awareness should also be provided as part of your overall safety program
