Cross docking facility layoutCross Docking: What are the facility layout considerations?

Third in Chris Doyle's cross docking series

If you started from scratch, many might simply build a cross dock facility with a much shallower depth than most warehouses. A depth of a hundred feet or so, with incoming product on one side that can be easily moved a short distance and loaded on the other side to an outbound truck. Most of us however, must deal with an existing facility, many times a large square box which is not generally the preferred layout...

VIDEO: How does dynamic zone allocation work?

EZLogic systems with dynamic zone allocation automatically adjust the conveyor's zone length to accommodate the length of the carton being conveyed. This provides better control of your boxes and naturally increases carton throughput. accumulation density, conveyor efficiency, and system flexibility. If desired you can size zones for the smallest carton for maximum efficiency. Longer cartons introduced after installation do not obsolete the system, and the low-usage, long carton isn't a problem...

Breaking down the types of industrial shelving

While there are scores of shelving manufacturers and even more variations of trade names for them, there are really just three basic kinds of industrial shelving manufactured and broadly used — Rivet-Type, Steel Clip, and Wire. Of course, there are more variations of these shelving types than you can imagine, but most shelving boils down to these kinds. The basic types have different advantages and functions, so we're breaking it down here...

Study: RFID improves inventory accuracy

A recent study by the University of Arkansas RFID center confirms that RFID can have a significant positive effect on retail inventory accuracy. For players like Wal-Mart, this means millions of dollars in savings. A preliminary analysis demonstrated that an automated, RFID-enabled inventory system improved accuracy by about 13% in test stores compared to control stores...

Strip Doors - how much overlap, what kind of strip?

This time of year, lots of us are getting ready for summer operations. That may mean open dock doors and (unfortunately) lots of climate controlled air going to waste. Strip doors are the way many deal with it. We're often asked what kind of doors are needed.

For most operations, a smooth strip works fine. If you're worried about scratching and replacement, use a scratch-resistant or ribbed strip. In terms of overlap and strip size, it's pretty simple -- the smaller the strip, the easier it is to pass through, the less control it may offer. So an 8" strip with 50% overlap will be fine for foot and lift truck traffic, but doesn't quite offer the control of a 12" or 16" wide strip with 66% overlap (which is more difficult for pedestrian traffic to pass through). The entire idea is to balance accessibility with control, so pick the strip type and size that fits what is routinely going through the door and what you're trying to contain. That can be dust, airborne debris, or just cooled air...
