Cross Docking: is it viable for your operation?

This article is the second in a series of articles on cross docking by Cisco-Eagle's Chris Doyle.

In concept and on paper cross docking looks great, but, what about actual implementation? What kind of return do we get on this investment? The short answer is the implementation can be challenging. Rising steel, fuel costs - how to minimize the impact

Right now, we are seeing several indications that steel prices and surcharges are on the rise. While it hasn't reached the levels of price instability we saw in 2004, it is something to keep an eye on. As a material handling consumer, it's something you should track too. If we start to see shortages and escalating prices (like we did during '04), projects that you're going to execute may be better off done sooner rather than later.

The other issue is fuel costs. Projections have costs rising throughout the next year. That will add to the cost of capital equipment indirectly, but also add to the not-so-inconsequential cost of delivering it. Most freight companies add a fuel surcharge to the cost of delivery. As the price of fuel fluctuates, they adjust fuel surcharges accordingly. One freight company we work with adjusts their surcharges weekly.
