Forklift Safety Gate Systems

Automated & manual safety gates help prevent forklift/pedestrian collisions

Over 90% of forklifts sold in the United States eventually end up being involved in an accident

About 100 workers are killed, and another 20,000 are injured every year by forklifts, so safety is a paramount concern wherever forklifts are present.

Progressive companies are taking measures to reduce forklift injuries. Given the size and weight of, it becomes vital to the control the flow of pedestrian and equipment traffic in any operation.

Dangerous or blind intersections where visibility may be limited, such as high speed doors, or very high traffic areas are where traffic control gates are most highly recommended. When properly utilized, these gates can dramatically reduce or eliminate accidents by reducing the possibility of pedestrian traffic coming into contact with fork lift traffic.

Safety System Operation

  • To cross the forklift aisle, a pedestrian pushes a palm switch. The gate is equipped with two radar sensors that search for fork truck presence, both static and moving. If no fork lift is detected, red lights flash, an audible alarm beeps, and the gates automatically open into the aisle on opposing sides.

  • This forms a visual barricade to define the walkway. Once pedestrians have crossed and are in the clear, the aisle gates automatically close and everything goes back to standby so that forklifts can cross the aisle.

  • The gates will not open while a forklift is present: a motion sensor detects the continual presence of pedestrian, so the gates do not close until the sensor has not detected movement for a preset period of time. When a fork lift is detected the yellow lights flash. If a fork lift is detected when a pedestrian pushes the switch to activate the gates, the gates will remain closed until the fork lift aisle is cleared thus preventing the pedestrian from entering the fork lift aisle. These gates can also be tied into the fire alarm system. If the fire alarm is activated the gates will open to allow for pedestrian evacuation.

  • Gates are built into solid steel guard rails on each side where walkways and aisles are equipped with the two high guard system.
