Safety
Systems for Vertical Lifts
Each Pflow vertical lift
is designed with a variety of safety features that protect men, materials
and machines better than any other lifting equipment. Features like
spring-loaded safety cams, overtravel protection, safety gates and
enclosures that meet or exceed all code requirements. Contact us for more
information.
SOS
System Stops Carriage Free Fall
The Pflow Speed Operated Safety (SOS)
senses and responds to the failure of any component in a mechanical
lifting drive mechanism (chain/cable breakage or failures of the gear
reducer, brake equipped motor, drive shaft or sprockets). SOS employs a
unique escapement device that senses the descent speed of the carriage.
SOS actuates the lift Safety Cams if the descent speed exceeds a
predetermined velocity. The SOS escapement device is fail-safe and
requires no lubrication or maintenance.

How SOS Works
The Speed Operated Safety (SOS) is equipped
with a governor that is mounted at the top of the lift guide columns. As
the lift carriage moves up and down, the SOS governor spins at a fixed
rate that corresponds to the carriage travel speed. A weighted shaft on
the SOS device slides down an enclosure tube when the rotational angle of
the shaft reaches predetermined positions
(View A).
The SOS shaft rotates continuously whenever
the vertical lift is in operation. A small chain connects the SOS governor
to the lift Safety Cams
(View B).
When a component of the lift drive
mechanism fails, the carriage goes into a Free Fall mode. Carriage Free
Fall causes the SOS governor to speed-up. As a result, the SOS shaft is
held in its outer most position via centrifugal force. The SOS shaft then
contacts a stop bar (View C).
Governor rotation ceases and the small
chain pulls a trigger pin to activate the lift Safety Cams (View D).
The Safety Cams then rotate into a locked position and grip the guide
columns to prevent Carriage Free Fall.

Patented DeckLock
System Locks In Safety At Every Level
|
 |
 |
Vertical
lift with DeckLock System
High capacity DeckLocks automatically extend to lock the vertical
lift carriage into place at critical upper levels. DeckLock is an
exclusive safety system that prevents carriage creep, bounce or
drop.
|
Vertical
lift without DeckLock System
When a forklift is fully loaded, 80% of the weight rests on the
front wheels. If this weight exceeds the rated capacity of the
vertical lift, a potential drop in the carriage will occur.
|
DeckLock Eliminates unsafe conditions
during loading and unloading of vertical lifts. Prevents misuse of
vertical lift. Automatically locks the vertical lift carriage at critical
upper levels and eliminates carriage creep, bounce or drop. Provides 3:1
extra load capacity on two-post vertical lifts and 2:1 extra capacity on
four-post vertical lifts.
Protects men, materials and machines by
eliminating potential accidents caused by carriage creep or drop. Offers
added assurance for safe loading and unloading with a forklift. Ensures
that pallet jacks and hand trucks can load/unload smoothly, easily and
safely. Prevents uncontrolled descent in the case of extra weight during
loading/unloading operations. Carriage must be raised slightly to
disengage DeckLocks. If lift is overloaded, carriage is prevented from
lifting off the DeckLocks and safe support is maintained.
Simple, reliable, mechanical operation is
standard. Pneumatic operation provided for multi-level applications.
Exclusive safety system available only on Pflow Vertical Lifts.

Safety
Barriers
Safety barriers provide an extra measure of
protection to Vertical Reciprocating Conveyors (VRC) by acting as a backup
system to standard safety gates and doors. Installs directly to your
Vertical Lift - behind the lift safety gate or door. Automatically closes
off upper level openings when the carriage is not present.
|

|

|
|
Safety
Bars are in position at upper level opening as the Vertical Lift
carriage is raised from a lower level.
|
As
carriage raises, it moves the Safety Bars up automatically (lower
bar is raised to the upper bar level).
|
When
carriage is in position at upper level opening, both Safety Bars are
at the highest position, completely out-of-the-way. When carriage is
lowered again, the bars automatically are lowered into position to
close off upper level opening.
|
Raises completely out-of-the-way for
loading or unloading of the carriage. Lowers back into position when
carriage is lowered. Guards against open shafts and potential employee
injury. Assures backup protection if the Vertical Lift safety gate or door
interlock system is damaged or malfunctions. Fully Automatic - requires no
controls or complicated mechanisms. Offers added assurance for safe
operation of your Vertical Lift.
Highly recommended for use with opaque
doors or with gates installed in poorly lighted areas.

Gates
& Enclosures
Provide maximum safety protection for VRC
(Vertical Reciprocating Conveyor) installations. Heavy 3" x 4"
vertical posts, offered only by Pflow, are more durable, won't bend on
impact and ensure smooth, trouble-free operation. Expanded metal panels
are more resistant to damage than woven panels, easier to repair. All
gates are equipped with electro-mechanical interlocks and available in
custom sizes.
Vertical acting gates
are available in single and bi-panel models. Designed to save space, don't
intrude into aisles, and are not easily damaged. Bi-panel models, with
telescoping panels, offer the most space-efficient protection and require
significantly less overhead clearance. Vertical acting gates are
counterbalanced with an exclusive cross-shaft design. This ensures the
gate remains constantly level when raised from either the right side, left
side or center.
Non-binding UHMW sliding
guides on vertical acting gates tolerate misaligned posts better than
roller guides and are more resistant to damage. Chain is used instead of
cable for greater strength and durability. Single
or bi-parting swing gates and sliding gates are offered in a variety of
widths. Tubular construction on swing gates allows for oversized gates to
7' width maximum.
Vertical Acting Gates
provide ease and safety in loading and unloading of VRC's. Standard
clearance permits passage of full 7' high loads. A 72" high
vertical acting gate is recommended at all levels except the top
level where a 48" high gate is recommended.
Overhead clearance
required for vertical acting gates:
-
11'6" for
48" high single panel
-
10' for 48"
high bi-panel
-
13'6" for
72" high single panel
-
11' for 72"
high bi-panel

Single or bi-parting swing
gates and sliding gates are offered
in a variety of widths. Tubular construction on swing gates allows for
oversized gates to 7' width maximum.

|
Single
and bi-parting swing gates are available in a variety of widths.
Equipped with 7'8" post heights that permit passage of full 7'
high loads. Maximum single-panel width is 7'. Bi-parting swing gates
save space using smaller panels and come in standard sizes to 12'
wide overall. Both types are available in custom sizes.
|
Swing Gates
conserve space and are excellent for many vertical lift applications
Sliding
Gates are supplied with overhead track and 7'8" high
support posts to permit passage of full 7' high loads. The maximum
standard width is 11' overall. Custom sizes available.
|

|
Enclosure Panels
are made of 8' high expanded metal. Standard panels are 1' to 5' wide and
painted to match VRC. All mounting hardware is included. Nonstandard
sizes, custom finishes and galvanized panels available on request.

|
Enclosure
panels are fabricated of expanded metal and structural angle in
1' increments up to 5' in width. Supplied with appropriate mounting
hardware and painted to match the VRC.
|
Accessories For An Exact
Fit: Safety Gates & Enclosures can be equipped with a variety of
accessories to fit your application. These include filler panels, inside
and outside angles, wall fasteners, stiffeners and mounting hardware.
Power operators are available on vertical and sliding gates.
Variety Of Gate Interlocks:
There are a wide variety of safety gate interlocks to meet your exact
application requirements (including environmental and explosion proof).
Interlocks prevent the gate from being opened unless the carriage is at a
designated level and also prevent carriage movement if the gate is not
fully closed and locked.
