A double deep racking configuration is just what it sounds like: pallets are stored two deep on a rack to eliminate a portion of aisle space. This may take the form of a single-sided configuration, loaded and unloaded from one side, or a double-sided configuration with four pallets deep, picked from either side. It's ideal for cold storage applications, where space is at a premium and inventory rotation is less of an issue.
You lose some selectivity with this layout, and it requires some way of accessing the back pallet position, like a deep-reach forklift or a pantograph. But the payoff is saving space by up to 65%; depending on the cost of warehouse space in your area, that savings might justify the tradeoffs.
If you can store the same SKU two pallets deep, and if you don't need first-in-first-out storage, your facility might be a good candidate for a double-deep system.
