Glossary of Steel Shelving Terminology

Adder Unit: A shelving unit that connects to a starter unit and uses common sides to create a row of shelving.  An open adder unit is comprised of: four offset angle posts, desired number of shelves, one necessary back brace, and one side brace. A closed adder unit is comprised of 4 offset angle posts, desired number of shelves, one back panel, and one side panel.

Back Braces: Attaches to rear posts of open type shelving to ensure lateral stability.

Back Panel: completely closes the back of shelving units and provides lateral stability.

Base Strip: An option that closes the gap between the bottom shelf and the floor. This option is often used to promote good housekeeping by preventing the accumulation of dust and debris beneath bottom shelves.

Bin Front: An accessory that helps retain small bulk parts on a shelf.

Box Post: Used as a common front post or row end. Allows independent 1" vertical adjustability and access to the full shelf width. (Note: Cisco-Eagle does not use box posts in our standard shelving units. We prefer offset angle posts).

Clipper Hi-Performance Shelf: Available in 19 sizes and 4 classes of load carrying capacity. May be clipped or bolted to posts.

Closed-Type Shelving: Shelving units closed on back and sides by panels.

Drawer Insert Unit: An option. Small drawer units designed for 12" or 18" deep shelving. Provides an efficient means of storing and organizing small items.

Full Height Dividers: An option used to vertically subdivide the shelf into smaller units. Punched top and bottom for attachment to shelves.

Finished End Panel: An option to provide an attractive row end, covering the exposed fasteners. 

Heavy Duty Modular Drawers: This accessory enables you to transform part of a shelving unit into secure, high-density storage for small parts. Drawers extend fully. 

Label Holder: An option that allows you to label shelves with 7/8" labels.

Offset Angle Post (Note: Cisco-Eagle uses offset angle posts exclusively in our shelving units): A roll-formed high strength post punched on 1" centers for vertical shelf adjustment using shelf clips or nuts & bolts. Offset recess adds rigidity and allows for independent shelf clip adjustment. Ends of flanges are punched on 3" centers to accept sway braces or closed panels.

Open Type Shelving: Shelving braced by side and back bracers for support, accessible from most directions.

Partial Height Divider: An option that divides shelves into sections.

Shelf Boxes: An option. Steel, open top boxes that attach to a shelf. Excellent small parts/item storage. Equipped with built-in stop.

Shelf Capacity: The weight each shelf will bear. Capacities are calculated assuming evenly distributed loads.

Shelf Clip: The component that attaches shelves to posts. The clip allows easy repositioning of shelving units in 1" increments. Four shelf clips are used to hold a shelf, and do not require tools to remove and adjust.

Shelf Depth: The front-to-back dimension of the shelving unit.

Shelf Openings: Openings are the space between shelf levels. For example, a seven shelf unit will have six openings.

Side Braces: Braces designed to eliminate front-to-back sway on Open Type Shelving Units.

Side Panel: Steel sheet used to enclose sides of closed-type shelving units. Is used as the brace for the side panels rather than the side bracers used in open type shelving units.

Sliding Divider: This option is formed to fit around the front and rear flanges of a shelf and slide to create variable, divided spaces.

Starter Unit: A complete and freestanding shelving unit. An open starter unit is comprised of: four offset angle posts, desired number of shelves, one back brace, and two side braces. A closed starter unit is comprised of 4 offset angle posts, desired number of shelves, one back panel, and two side panels.
