Safety starts on day one

On their start date at Cisco-Eagle, our technicians meet with our HSE manager for extensive one-on-one training. We want them to understand why we use a behavior-based safety program and why each policy exists. We want them to understand the real-world impacts of their actions on the job.

After their initial orientation, techs must complete a series of training modules before they're even allowed to shadow another tech. They cover about fifty topics, including heat and cold stress, fall protection, driver safety, basic first aid and pinch point safety.

"In our industry, electrical safety is one of the biggest concerns. That's why we emphasize lockout/tagout and do an actual simulation so the techs can demonstrate their understanding. We also require several electrical safety trainings, including arc flash. Arc flash represents only 2% of electrical fatalities, but the injuries can be devastating. The thing is that it's almost always preventable, so we target that hazard with regular training."

An ongoing effort

Even once our technicians have completed their virtual and hands-on training and are out working in the field, their safety training remains ongoing. All of our techs work toward OSHA 10 and OSHA 30 training, and they're assessed regularly on lockout/tagout, electrical safety and arc flash. We also hold monthly Toolbox Talks to cover topics based on OSHA updates, recent events in the news or something our HSE team has observed in the field. There's no end date to our safety program. Even our long-tenured team members continually go through training, because we want them to be aware of safety hazards throughout their career.
