USBCs install under the bed of a conveyor to keep people from reaching into moving components and causing damage or getting injured. They also catch falling items like debris and parts, as well as fluids like oil. This helps prevent a significant hazard—oil spills can cause slips, and falling parts can injure someone walking by.
When do you need a USBC?
Underside bed covers are recommended in these situations:
- On incline conveyors, USBCs are recommended up to 8 feet high to account for the height of a person. (Beyond that height, the conveyor is considered guarded by location.)
- If you have overhead conveyors, USBCs are specified for any conveyor mounted less than 10 feet off the ground.
A few specification notes:
- Some USBCs, typically those included with parcel conveyors, are hinged to allow easy access for cleaning
- USBCs typically come in a black finish, which helps make foreign objects and debris more visible
