The basic power and free design comprises a powered enclosed chain track above an unpowered track with free, independently controlled trolleys. "Pusher dogs," simple mechanical devices inserted into the chain, engage the trolleys to move them and disengage to stop them. A single system can integrate multiple conveyor lines with diverts and merges for sortation and accumulation.
Power and free comes in two standard carrying capacities of 220 or 440 pounds per trolley for the S-310 and S-320 models respectively; a load bar hung between two trolleys has a capacity of 440 or 880 pounds. Lower capacities apply when side-loaded or inverted. Track can be suspended from the ceiling or mounted on structural steel floor supports.
Use power and free conveyors to accumulate parts between workstations. Since load carrying trolleys move independently, you can hold items stationary in a buffering area as more come up the line behind them; release parts to the next workstation as needed. Or take advantage of power and free's compact turn radius and minimal 8" center-to-center loading to create a high density storage system.
Like other overhead conveyor styles, heat- and corrosion-resistant power and free can transport parts through curing ovens and wash areas. But power and free is unique in its ability to divert and merge multiple tracks, providing superior flexibility in how you set up your finishing lines. For instance, sort products among three paint lines which then merge to go through a single curing oven.
Overhead conveyor is the choice method to move products through an assembly line because it presents work at an ergonomic height while providing access to every side. Use power and free conveyor to divert trolleys to workstations where individual loads can be stopped or moved independently. This is a convenient feature when different production areas work at different speeds.
Other manufacturing and material handling applications are possible, including use of the conveyor as an AS/RS.
