Sortation application checklist
Load and product
Define the load you'll be conveying. Will you be sorting cartons, bags, envelopes or other loads? Define the dimensions, weights and variety of items that will need to be sorted through the system.
Sort speed and rates
Sortation speed and rates are determined by load characteristics, gaps between conveyed items and desired rate-per-minute.
Sortation equipment footprint
The size of your sorter equipment is dictated by the size of your loads, which can range from small bags to large components. Load dimensions—current and anticipated future—are critical in this decision. Some restrictions may include the available space along the conveyor line and overall facility size. Shoe sorters have a larger footprint than narrow belt sorters, for instance.
Cost and ROI
There are plenty of options, ranging from costly to economical. Sorter cost is based on technology type, desired sort rates, footprint.
- Medium-rate belted pivot wheel sorters are more economical than some other options that handle between 65 and 85 sorts per minute. They're excellent for stable loads with flat bottoms.
- Narrow belt sorters are ideal for applications when space is a driving factor. They have diverts of 30 and 90 degrees and are medium rate, with speeds of 60 to 70 sorts per minute and 90 degrees, and 65 to 85 at 30 degrees. Narrow belt sorters are optimal for boxes, totes or jiffy packs.
- Sliding shoe sorters are highly accurate and high velocity. They are strong in ecommerce, distribution and fulfillment facilities of all types. Depending on the type of slat and technology, rates range from 175 at the low end and 225 at the high end, depending on product size.
