Interview: Proximity Detection for Forklift Safety

June 1, 2016

ZoneSafe Pedestrian Safety System

Safety has always been important to warehousing and manufacturing, but in recent years, the emphasis has grown – and it’s no wonder.

The forklift has always been at or near the top of these concerns, due to its common use. There are nearly 900,000 forklifts in use in the United State. Forklift accidents are always in OSHA’s top ten  safety violations lists. But the reality is that despite the dangers they can present, forklifts are indispensable for material handling operations.

We sat down with Donald Prater, Cisco-Eagle’s Safety Division Manager, to discuss some common questions involving ZoneSafe, a proximity detection technology that helps alert drivers that pedestrians are nearby as they do their work.

Forklifts are often acknowledged as the top safety issue in warehouse and distribution center operations. A number of things make this true: first, forklifts account for 1% of industrial accidents, but 10% of injuries. Secondly, a given forklift has a 90% chance of an accident during its useful life. More alarming is that forklifts account for 85 to 100 deaths in the United States ever year. Let’s explore some ways you can make forklift use safer in your facility.

Seismic Zones and Pallet Rack: An Evolving Situation

August 12, 2015

2015-manufacturing

Is your facility in a seismic zone? Are you sure?

An increasing number of areas across the United States are demonstrating geological stresses and increased fault pressures that lead to earthquakes and smaller seismic events. So much more that our national seismic map was recently updated to include areas of the northeast and southern tier states not previously known for earthquakes, as well as enhanced zone classification in the inter-mountain west and known fault areas. Are you sure your pallet rack is correctly configured to withstand seismic ground forces?

The Case for Industrial Safety Training

April 30, 2015

Forklift Safety Needs

Statistics show that the single largest cause of accident and injury in the work place is human error. People sometimes doing things they know they shouldn’t, sometimes not knowing they shouldn’t, and sometimes not doing things they know they should. These are all classic cases of human error. These are the sins of commission (you did it), ignorance (you didn’t know), and omission (you knew but didn’t do what you should have).
